Develops listening and oral confidence by using colloquial language in a variety of practical situations, combined with extending written and reading competency.

1.220 English:Communication and the Media

Introduces students to linguistic and sociolinguistic concepts which allow them to critically analyse the language used in the media, and for persuasion in general.

1.232 English Language Teaching

Introduces the principles of language teaching and their practical application in a language learning environment.

1.233 Reflecting on Classrooms

Students develop the skills of observation and evaluation of what goes on in a language classroom. They learn how to reflect on their own and others' teaching practice with a view to analysis and improvement.

1.234 Approaches to Language Teaching and Learning

The nature of approaches, methodological design, and procedural techniques which characterise the construct of “method” in language teaching and learning. Theories of second / foreign language learning are also discussed.

CULTURE
1.211 Intercultural Communication

An extension of communication studies with on emphasis on international and cross-cultural communication.

1.231 Interaction between Language and Culture

Students will gain an appreciation of the influence language has on societal attitudes and values, and how such elements are critical in affecting language change.

1.253 Cultural Change and Development in Asian Countries

Effects of significant events on the cultural, social and business environment of selected Asian countries.

1.261 Research Methods

All stages of a research project are explained. Quantitative and qualitative techniques are applied to social science research projects.
