Auckland is well served for public transport. Two main bus routes along New North Road and Great North Road are within walking distance from AIS St Helens, and the Baldwin Avenue train station is close by. AIS St Helens also provides for parking at both its campuses for those who wish to drive private cars to the institute. back to top
Airport Pick-up
An AIS St Helens representative will be waiting for you in the main arrivals area at Auckland International Airport. Walk straight out the exit into the arrivals lounge. Don't turn left at the Group Tours exit.
If the AIS St Helens representative is not waiting in the arrivals lounge, don't panic! Wait at the McDonald's restaurant to the side of the lounge. Do not go anywhere else - our representative will find you there.
If, after one hour, you still haven't been picked up by our representative, please phone 09-815 1717 ext 811 or 09-815 3770 (for the dormitory office during office hours), or 021 616 282 (for our security staff after hours) to advise that you are still waiting.
Public Transport
Auckland train and bus routes are divided into sections called stages; the more stages you have to travel, the higher the fare. For example, travelling from the city to Mt Albert is two stages, and from the city to Henderson is four stages. Mt Albert to New Lynn is one stage.
To travel on Auckland trains, you have the choice of purchasing a pre-paid ‘AT HOP’ smart card, or a single trip ticket before boarding at Ticket & Top-Up machines located at all train stations. A single trip ticket is only valid for two hours from the time of purchase. A tertiary student discount (concession) is available when purchasing AT HOP cards - visit www.athop.co.nz to find out more.
The closest train stop to AIS St Helens is the Baldwin Avenue Station (off Rossgrove Terrace), just five minutes’ walk away. A two-stage single-ride train journey purchased at a Ticket & Top-Up machine will cost $3.40.
The public bus service from the city to the vicinity of AIS St Helens takes 20-25 minutes. Bus stops near the campus are located in Great North Road near St Lukes Road, and in New North Road near Wairere Avenue. The cash fare for two stages costs $3.40 per trip.
Further information on bus, train and ferry timetables, fares and services is available by visiting www.maxx.co.nz. You can also plan your journey on this website by entering the starting point and destination, dates and times.
Campus Parking
Student car parking areas are provided at both the Main and Asquith Campuses - see the map below. Be careful not to park in spaces marked as reserved for staff, as unauthorised vehicles may be wheel clamped. The Main Campus dormitory car parking area is reserved for residents only.
Shuttle Service
A free shuttle bus service operates on weekdays between the city and the Main Campus. The morning service departs from Gore Street in the city (on the side opposite to Gore Street Lane) at 8.15am, and the return service departs from the Main Campus at 2.00pm. Enquire at Main Campus reception if you wish to use the morning shuttle service as a Shuttle Pass card is required.
Driving in New Zealand
AIS St Helens supports safe driving on New Zealand roads, and recognises that driving in a new country can be stressful and dangerous. We are pleased to provide our international students with free access to online safe driving lessons provided by turaguides™. www.turaguides.com back to top
